Cabbagetown is centrally located and is known for the largest continuous area of preserved Victorian homes in all of North America.
This flourished neighbourhood is nestled in central Toronto, on the east side of the downtown area. Bordered by Wellesley Street on its north, Don River on its east, Gerrard Street on its south, and Sherbourne Street on its west, the community is one of the city’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, with a diverse mix of residents consisting of artists, writers, musicians, academics, doctors, and individuals from different walks of life.
Many new residents are attracted by its close proximity to the University of Toronto and a wealth of cultural venues and organizations situated in the area.
History
In its early days, Cabbagetown was known as Don Vale, a village on the outskirts of Toronto. Prior to the 1850s, the area consisted mostly of vast farmland dotted with numerous cottages and vegetable plots.
In the late 1900s, the area was officially included as part of the city, serving as the home to many Irish residents who made their living in the industries of nearby Corktown and along the lake shore. Its quirky name is said to originate from some of its Irish inhabitants, who dug up their lawns in order to plant cabbages.

The downtown business and entertainment districts of Toronto are around ten minutes away from Cabbagetown, and the Don Valley Parkway is approximately five minutes away. Residents can use the Carlton Street streetcar or the Wellesley bus to get to the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line. The Bloor-Danforth subway line is also accessible via the Parliament streetcar and Sherbourne bus.

Riverdale Park is one of Cabbagetown’s most popular outdoor attractions, with its peaceful ponds, colourful flower gardens, kid-friendly programs, and pathways and trails meandering through wooded parklands. The park is also home to Riverdale Farm, an actual working farm that offers interactive programs to young visitors who want to learn more about agricultural concepts and experiences.

Residents can head to the Old Cabbagetown shopping district along Parliament Street to check out the unique shops, wide array of restaurants, and specialty food shops.
