The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise’s new facility raises the bar for indoor-outdoor spas.

When I first arrived at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, its turquoise blue lake and snow-covered mountain tops took my breath away. This is a view worth flying for. This was, perhaps, the most beautiful view I’d ever laid my eyes on. Sure, the photos I stared at on Instagram before booking my trip were enticing, but they didn’t quite capture the full magic of Lake Louise. I flew out West to check out the property’s new Basin Glacial Waters, an all-sensory wellness experience infusing nature and science—really though, I was most excited to see the lake’s photo-ready views. There’s no question they were mesmerizing, but now that I’m back home, it’s Basin I can’t stop thinking about. This wellness retreat offers the ultimate travel luxury: a chance to quiet the noise and connect with what’s right in front of you. For the first time, I left a trip feeling completely recharged. I wasn’t in desperate need of a reset—I was relaxed and ready to get back into my usual routine.

Beyond the spa
The emphasis on wellness and mindfulness doesn’t end when you leave Basin—it’s weaved into every aspect of the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. The hotel offers endless opportunities to reconnect with yourself and nature, from guided hikes and sound bath mediation to personalized facials and massages. Surprisingly, my favorite wellness experience during my stay happened outside of Basin altogether. I pushed myself to do a guided cold plunge in Lake Louise. Before braving the cold, my guide practiced proper breathing and mindfulness techniques with me so that I could keep myself calm during the plunge. She also went over the benefits of the cold plunge, including improved circulation and mood. All of the pain and panicked thoughts that arose when I hit the water left my mind as soon as I looked up and saw everything around me. I had stepped into the center of the most breathtaking view I had ever seen and was completely mesmerized by its beauty.
The takeaway
Upon arriving at Basin, I was welcomed into a locker room where I could change and drop off my personal belongings, including my phone (electronics are not allowed in Basin Glacial Waters). I’m embarrassed to admit how badly I wanted to take a photo of the indoor-outdoor infinity pool that overlooks the lake. But after a few minutes, I began to realize the many joys of having a phone-free afternoon. No checking my email or work messages or Instagram. Basin encourages you to disconnect with the outside world and stay present from start to finish. And after several hours of completely unplugging and giving my nervous system a chance to fully reset, I felt calmer and more relaxed than I have in some time.
Moving from hot to cold temperatures in the different thermal pools and heated rooms helped boost circulation, calm the body, and restore equilibrium. This feeling of stillness and mental clarity stuck with me. I left Basin eager to pull more of it into my daily life however I can. Now I put more stock into the benefits of saunas, cold plunges, and thermotherapy, seeking it out at local studios and simulating the benefits wherever I can. What I didn’t expect, though, is learning that wellness isn’t only about slowing down. At Basin, it’s also about pushing yourself further, fighting through discomfort, and forcing yourself to unplug and unwind whenever possible.
