At a New Wellness Spa on Lake Louise, Soaking in Thermal Baths and Mountain Views

The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise’s new facility raises the bar for indoor-outdoor spas.

Meaghan Kenny

When I first arrived at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, its turquoise blue lake and snow-covered mountain tops took my breath away. This is a view worth flying for. This was, perhaps, the most beautiful view I’d ever laid my eyes on. Sure, the photos I stared at on Instagram before booking my trip were enticing, but they didn’t quite capture the full magic of Lake Louise. I flew out West to check out the property’s new Basin Glacial Waters, an all-sensory wellness experience infusing nature and science—really though, I was most excited to see the lake’s photo-ready views. There’s no question they were mesmerizing, but now that I’m back home, it’s Basin I can’t stop thinking about. This wellness retreat offers the ultimate travel luxury: a chance to quiet the noise and connect with what’s right in front of you. For the first time, I left a trip feeling completely recharged. I wasn’t in desperate need of a reset—I was relaxed and ready to get back into my usual routine.

The view from the inside of Basin Glacial Waters

In a nutshell

Opened in September 2025, Basin Glacial Waters has solidified the already exceptional Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise as a leader in the wellness scene. Nestled within Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, the hotel has been attracting travelers near and far for decades thanks to its unique natural spring and majestic views. But Basin ups the ante: For the first time, travelers are booking with wellness top of mind—Lake Louise’s storybook charm is just an added bonus.

Basin is an adults-only, all-sensory experience focused on thermotherapy, a type of treatment that applies heat to relieve pain, relax muscles, and improve blood flow throughout the body. Best of all, Basin is completely customizable to each individual’s needs—and there is no shortage of treatments to try.

The indoor-outdoor thermal bathing facility invites guests to reimagine the hotel spa, with offerings that go far beyond traditional Swedish massages and facials; it uses research-backed methods to treat your muscles and relax your mind. Basin’s unique sauna ceremonies, thermal pools, and glacial lounges combine cutting-edge science and wellness techniques with the Fairmont’s unrivaled attention to detail and service.

My partner joined me at Basin, and while we went to most of our treatments together, we split up throughout the afternoon to spend more time where we needed to. Some guests came with a partner like me, and others with friends seeking a different type of group trip. And because Basin is completely tailored to each individual’s needs, it’s an inviting place to come solo and fully immerse yourself in the experience.

Before arrival

I usually find large spas intimidating; I never know where to start or how to get the most out of my visit. Basin makes it simple. Before entering the space, guests can choose from a series of curated Thermal Trails that are designed to guide you through its many offerings based on your intention for the day. My goal was to leave Basin feeling more relaxed and more present than when I came in. I chose the Stillness Trail and received a small guide sheet to follow. My trail instructed me to begin with a 10-minute session in the hot stone room, followed by a Kneipp walk, then time in the hydro pool, aromatic steam room, waterfall shower, bio sauna, and salt relaxation room, ending in the herbal tea room. Instead of guessing what to try first, Basin set me up for success from the start and offered me an overview of each treatment and the benefit of a thermotherapy circuit.

And while there

To understand Basin, forget everything you know about spas. Basin Glacial Waters is an all-sensory experience that’s designed to benefit every part of the mind, body, and spirit. And whatever your wellness goals, there are plenty of thermotherapy options to choose from. At Basin, you’ll find everything from classic spaces like a steam room to loosen tight muscles and clear congestion to revolutionary sauna rituals that encourage complete mindfulness.

One of my favorite stops at Basin that highlighted all the benefits of a thermotherapy circuit was the Kneipp pool. Guests alternate walking slowly through two side-by-side pools of contrasting temperatures at least three times. Alternating between these two extremes is intended to calm the nervous system, strengthen the immune system, and stimulate lower leg circulation. In between treatments, I stopped by the Glacier Lounge to rehydrate and refuel. I was able to choose from a menu of clean dishes and refreshing juices, teas, and elixirs.

I took part in a unique sauna ceremony called the Aufguss ritual, and it was without a doubt the most impactful part of my visit at Basin. The European wellness tradition, pioneered by sauna master Lasse Eriksen, is a multi-sensory experience designed to lift mood and mental clarity, heighten your senses, loosen deep-held tension, and aid in detoxification. During the 15-minute group ceremony, rising heat and steam are swirled by the sweep of a towel, carrying the scent of pure essential oils through the air. I’ve been in many saunas before, but none quite like this. It was hotter than any sauna I had ever stepped foot in—and the heat only continued to rise. As sweat poured from every inch of my body, I couldn’t think about anything other than the heat. All other thoughts were pushed away. Our instructor guided us through the discomfort, allowing us to push ourselves further than we thought possible. The ritual offers a challenging mind and body connection that forces you to stay calm and present.

To my surprise, all 20 of us that took part in the ritual—with ages ranging from mid twenties to early sixties, made it through to the end. And after sweating out about a liter of water during the ceremony, I left feeling light and refreshed. I followed up the ritual by visiting the outdoor thermal pools. These are all at distinct temperatures—warm, neutral, and cool—and are meant to guide the body through complete thermal balance. This helps improve sleep quality, alleviates stress, and enhances joint mobility.

I heard there was no better way to end my day at Basin than with a swim through the Vitality Pool: a sprawling inside-outside pool with a front-row seat to some of the most surreal views that Lake Louise has to offer. So that’s what I did, taking in the scenery while the pool naturally relieved any aches, loosened tight muscles, and reduced stress. I could have stayed there forever. It was the pinch-me moment I imagine every guest of Basin has experienced.

Beyond the spa

The emphasis on wellness and mindfulness doesn’t end when you leave Basin—it’s weaved into every aspect of the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. The hotel offers endless opportunities to reconnect with yourself and nature, from guided hikes and sound bath mediation to personalized facials and massages. Surprisingly, my favorite wellness experience during my stay happened outside of Basin altogether. I pushed myself to do a guided cold plunge in Lake Louise. Before braving the cold, my guide practiced proper breathing and mindfulness techniques with me so that I could keep myself calm during the plunge. She also went over the benefits of the cold plunge, including improved circulation and mood. All of the pain and panicked thoughts that arose when I hit the water left my mind as soon as I looked up and saw everything around me. I had stepped into the center of the most breathtaking view I had ever seen and was completely mesmerized by its beauty.

The takeaway

Upon arriving at Basin, I was welcomed into a locker room where I could change and drop off my personal belongings, including my phone (electronics are not allowed in Basin Glacial Waters). I’m embarrassed to admit how badly I wanted to take a photo of the indoor-outdoor infinity pool that overlooks the lake. But after a few minutes, I began to realize the many joys of having a phone-free afternoon. No checking my email or work messages or Instagram. Basin encourages you to disconnect with the outside world and stay present from start to finish. And after several hours of completely unplugging and giving my nervous system a chance to fully reset, I felt calmer and more relaxed than I have in some time.

Moving from hot to cold temperatures in the different thermal pools and heated rooms helped boost circulation, calm the body, and restore equilibrium. This feeling of stillness and mental clarity stuck with me. I left Basin eager to pull more of it into my daily life however I can. Now I put more stock into the benefits of saunas, cold plunges, and thermotherapy, seeking it out at local studios and simulating the benefits wherever I can. What I didn’t expect, though, is learning that wellness isn’t only about slowing down. At Basin, it’s also about pushing yourself further, fighting through discomfort, and forcing yourself to unplug and unwind whenever possible.
